The
Purbeck herd (Devon cattle)
We
manage the Purbeck herd of pedigree Devons (established 1995),
which is owned by the National Trust. The herd graze Hartland
moor National Nature Reserve between Wareham and Corfe Castle,
on the Isle of Purbeck, Dorset.
This
herd consists of 50 suckler cows. In addition all heifers
are reared and put to the bull, and so up to 25 in calf heifers
and in calf cows sold each autumn.
The
Purbeck herd graze only heath and acid grassland so are therefore
a very hardy foraging bloodline. As such, this is an excellent
source of hardy breeding stock, maintaining the essence of
the breed. We also sell most steer calves at weaning in the
autumn on a £ per kg basis.
