Livestock Sales: The Purbeck herd (Devon cattle)

We manage the Purbeck herd of pedigree Devons (established in 1995). which is owned by the National Trust, and which graze Hartland Moor National Nature Reserve between Wareham and Corfe Castle.

This herd consists of 50 suckler cows. In addition all the heifers are reared and put to the bull and so up to 25 in calf heifers and in calf cows are sold each autumn.

Tilbrook Tempest

The Purbeck herd graze only heath and acid grassland are therefore a very hardy bloodline, maintaining the essence of the breed. Bulls we have used in the last 4 years are Stonegrove Just William, Tilbrook Tempest, and Forde Abbey Emperor. We have also increased the amount of polled blood in the herd with Goldings Ransome 4th and Playley Ireland (out of Kaurivale).

Forde Abbey Emperor

We also sell most steer calves at weaning in the autumn on a £ per kg basis. In addition to this we sell 20 or so in-calf heifers and in-calf older cows every year.
